Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ How South Africa used the ‘G20 megaphone’: Throughout its presidency, South Africa championed four key themes: ensuring debt sustainability; strengthening disaster resilience and response; mobilising finance for a just energy transition; and leveraging critical minerals for inclusive growth. Ramaphosa, in a G20 research group publication that was published shortly before the Johannesburg Leaders’ Summit, said: “The challenges confronting the world can only be resolved through cooperation, collaboration and partnership.

◼️ SA has 1 police officer for every 400 people: This comes as South Africa’s crime levels continue to climb year after year, with suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu describing them as intolerable. In SAPS’ 2023/24 annual report, Mchunu noted that the country’s crime levels “are on the increase and are intolerable”. He explained that the leading crimes are contact crimes, such as murders and rape, as well as hijackings and kidnappings for ransom payments.

◼️ SA court rules anti-migrant clinic blockades illegal: The Johannesburg High Court has ordered Operation Dudula to stop harassing migrants. The group says it will appeal. Dale McKinley, a spokesperson for Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia, condemned the group. “We cannot have private citizens; we cannot have vigilantes running around arresting people or demanding certain things. This is just a basic rule of law,” he said. “The only people who are allowed to ask others are government officials.”

◼️ How much you’ll save on your bond: The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has reduced the repo rate by 25 basis points, which provides some additional financial relief for homeowners and prospective buyers. This decision, announced after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, brings the repo rate to 6.75% and the prime lending rate to 10.25%. The decision was unanimous.
