Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ SA warns over critical infrastructure collapse: “The encouraging thing is that many of the solutions already exist if we focus on protecting and managing the water systems we already have.” She pushed back against the narrative that South Africa is simply running out of water, noting that technical evidence suggests otherwise. “Technical analysis actually shows us that outages frequently occur when dams are not even empty, and treatment plants are operational. This indicates that there’s a failure in downstream distribution networks,” she said.

◼️ Making billions by sabotaging Eskom: “Immediately after the invasion, the Russian supply of gas into Western Europe stopped, and they had to buy coal from South Africa,” De Ruyter explained. As a result, coal prices soared to record highs, resulting in miners and exporters raking in immense profits. Criminal syndicates were not going to miss out on this. “That spike in coal prices created a huge arbitrage between Eskom contract prices and export prices for exactly the same quality of coal,” De Ruyter said. “That coal could then be stolen from Eskom and exported from South Africa to Western Europe, and that is exactly what happened.”

◼️ Chinese cars wanted: Deputy President Paul Mashatile has sought to get Chinese firms to increase investment in South Africa’s renewable energy and automotive sectors. This includes electric vehicle (EV) production and battery manufacturing, which he said would help build the country as the “next generation” of vehicle production and boost localisation.

◼️ Cartrack fined R5 million over consumer complaints: The matter reportedly stems from Cartrack’s offer of up to R150 000 in compensation to consumers whose stolen or hijacked vehicles could not be found. However, the compensation would be paid out only if the consumer could prove they had called the company every three months to check if their vehicle trackers were working. “When a vehicle is out of network coverage, preventing us from contacting the tracking device, we will not know whether there is a technical issue,” Cartrack spokesperson Lauren Human was quoted as saying.

◼️ Big changes coming for SIM cards: According to the SAPS, the circulation of improperly registered SIM cards has been linked to serious crime, including banking fraud, cash-in-transit heists, extortion, contract killings, and kidnappings. Despite the provisions of the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA), many SIMs are unregistered or registered incorrectly.
