Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ South Africans warned to evacuate countries: Dirco has warned South Africans in the Middle East to take “immediate advantage” of the limited commercial flights available out of the region, as heavy attacks are expected to continue in the coming days in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and more.

◼️ Doctors could be forced to conduct blood transfusion on Jehovah’s Witness teen: The 14-year-old teenager’s liver transplant surgery has been on hold for three months because his father is refusing to allow his son to have a blood transfusion. The department said parents must not withhold consent solely based on religious or other beliefs unless there is a medically accepted alternative available. When consent is withheld, the clinical team must assess whether the decision aligns with the best interests of the child.

◼️ Beneath SA’s cop scandal: Two main contradictory narratives have already emerged from the parallel hearings – the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament’s ad hoc committee. The contrasting stances are casting doubt on some of the country’s police leaders, including KwaZulu-Natal police boss Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, whose accusations last year sparked the parallel inquiries. Both hearings are investigating Mkhwanazi’s allegations that a drug cartel known as the Big Five has infiltrated the criminal justice system, politics and private security.

◼️ Goodbye Showmax: After numerous murmurs that CANAL+ is here to shake things up massively at Multichoice, the results are already showing. From changes at SuperSport, such as not broadcasting the Olympic Games, to contracts for new shows begging for signatures, now, fan favourite Showmax is coming to an end.

◼️ Warning to fibre networks: Many customers said they would have preferred to keep their previous, slower speeds and receive a price decrease. The Competition Commission’s inaugural Cost of Living report, published in September 2025, highlighted a concerning trend in fibre prices in recent years. It found that fibre broadband prices were increasing faster relative to inflation than mobile and fixed wireless Internet services.
