Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Mkhwanazi denies his allegations are part of a political campaign: “Either this guy is above everything and fighting a principled fight or there is a faction that is not clear at this time. For now, I must say this is a cop that goes for principles and puts his work first. “But his survival will be dependent on politics because what is happening right now – if this is not contained – is going to kill the ANC as an organisation.

◼️ ‘Our elders are waiting’: “From the embassy to Dirco, it’s been a long journey just to get this far, and we want to express our gratitude for the support during this difficult time,” Mkhululi said. Mthethwa, 58, died last week after falling from the 22nd floor of a hotel in Paris. French authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death. His body was found at the foot of the Hyatt Regency in western Paris.

◼️ Eskom average pay package over R1 million: A 2016 World Bank study found that Eskom was already potentially overstaffed by 66% in 2014. In that year, it had 41,787 employees. The World Bank also found that Eskom staff were paid double the norm in Sub-Saharan Africa. While former Eskom CEO André de Ruter disputes the claims of an oversized workforce, he agrees that the power utility’s staff are overpaid.
