Here’s what’s happening in *South Africa today:* 👇🏼
◼️ One loaf, one vote? In a video circulating on social media, party volunteers can be seen with a tray of loaves of bread and handing them out to the community. One of the volunteers can be heard saying: We are here from the ANC, one loaf one family, ANC is life, so one loaf means a lot,” she said. Her remarks were followed by applause from those who were at this event.

◼️ Eskom switch-off: These are the municipalities at risk: When Eskom announced on 5 March that it will proceed with steps towards credit control measures that may leave residents of 14 municipalities in the dark, it did not disclose the names of the affected councils. The announcement came as municipal arrear debt to Eskom exceeded R110 billion, posing an existential threat to the utility. Eskom has exhausted the inter-governmental process that courts have held should be exhausted prior to disconnection.

◼️ Diesel restrictions begin: Although major service stations in South Africa have not yet imposed restrictions on the sale of petrol and diesel, some agricultural companies have begun to limit daily diesel sales to farmers. In small towns and rural areas, several agricultural businesses offer diesel at lower prices compared to major franchise service stations. While these businesses are no longer farmer-owned cooperatives, they continue to be popular among farmers, as they help reduce agricultural input costs, which often require significant amounts of fuel.

◼️ Big changes coming for DStv: In terms of content, Canal+ said it wants to offer “the most compelling content” on the African continent, which will include joint productions, in-house channels and global partnerships. It said that key sports rights remain a cornerstone of this plan, while thousands of hours of local African content are produced annually.

◼️ Deadline missed for driving licence extension: Following months of planning to extend South Africa’s driver’s licences to eight years, the Transport Department has missed a critical deadline in its implementation plans. According to its own Annual Performance Plan, the department was meant to submit its decision to parliament for endorsement by the fourth quarter of the 2025/26 financial year, which it did not.
