Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ ICJ genocide case will continue despite Gaza ceasefire: “The peace deal that has been struck, which we welcome, will have no bearing on the case that is before the International Court of Justice,” Ramaphosa told parliament. “The case is proceeding, and it now has to go to the stage where Israel has to respond to our pleadings that have been filed in the court, and they have to do so by January of next year,” he added.

◼️ Ramaphosa suspends inspector-general of intelligence: President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended inspector-general of intelligence Imtiaz Fazel with immediate effect after a complaint. Parliament’s joint standing committee on intelligence (JSCI) told Ramaphosa it had received a complaint on the conduct of Fazel and that the committee would conduct an investigation in line with the Intelligence Services Act. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed the JSCI investigation.

◼️ How revelations of the Big 5 crime cartel has eroded public trust: According to Khumalo, this cartel has noticeably embedded itself within criminal networks and the country’s political, economic, and law enforcement structures. He painted a grim picture of the cartel’s operations: centred primarily in Gauteng—chosen for its economic advantages—the Big 5 reportedly traffic drugs while engaging in cross-border vehicle hijackings, kidnappings, tender fraud, and extortion.

◼️ Good news for some African nationals living in South Africa: Good news for approximately 180,000 Zimbabwean and 55,000 Lesotho exemption permit holders living and working in South Africa: the validity of their permits has been extended until 28 May 2027. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber announced this 18-month reprieve this week, as the current exemption permits were set to expire on 28 November 2025.

◼️ Good news for small households: In the past two years, things have changed. The prices of solar panels, inverters, and batteries have reduced significantly, while grid electricity tariffs have continued to climb. A MyBroadband analysis shows that households with low to moderate consumption can now immediately start seeing savings on their total energy bills with a loan-financed solar power system.
