◼️ Trump reignites ‘white genocide’ claims against SA: “What’s happening in South Africa is terrible. It’s a terrible situation. What they’re doing to people, a certain group of people, is unbelievable. You wouldn’t think it could happen today,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday after delivering his special address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

◼️ SA’s R222-billion energy deals with rich countries: The funds were set to come in the form of grants, loans and guarantees from France, Germany, the US, UK and the European Union. Finance from the World Bank and other development finance institutions was also on offer. Politicians, including Ramokgopa, have repeatedly expressed concern about the conditions under which funds will be disbursed.

◼️ Municipalities coming after property owners: South African homeowners are being warned that municipalities are increasingly focusing on how residential properties are used, and that any violations are being heavily penalised. “Municipalities are under enormous fiscal pressure, and we’re seeing a clear trend: they are turning to penalty rates as a way to stabilise their revenue,” said Van Deventer.
