Thu 27 November 2025:
Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ President notes US counterpart’s attempt to ban SA from G20: “South Africa is a member of the G20 in its own name and right. Its G20 membership is at the behest of all other members. South Africa is a sovereign constitutional democratic country and does not appreciate insults from another country about its membership and worth in participating in global platforms. “South Africa respects the sovereignty of all countries and will never insult or demean another country or its standing and worthiness in the community of nations,” the Presidency said in a statement issued on Thursday.

◼️ Over 10 million South Africans are over-indebted: The regulator’s Alfred Matsimbi said marketers tend to rely on a shopper’s fear of missing a good deal. “Everybody’s rushing to the shopping malls and they are buying. Many of us will end up buying things that we really don’t need. So, that’s the biggest mistake of buying things that we do not really need.” He added that this places consumers under psychological strain.

◼️ More name changes on the cards for SA: Responding to a parliamentary Q&A from the EFF’s Thapelo Mogale, Minister Gayton McKenzie broke down the numbers. He said that 53 name change applications had been brought in the 2024/25 financial year, largely from the KwaZulu-Natal structures.

◼️ DA formally lays charges against Zuma Sambudla for trafficking: Hattingh said the DA had new evidence around the matter including around 100 WhatsApp messages from a group allegedly administered by Zuma-Sambudla. He said these messages allegedly show clear coordination in luring at least 22 men to Russia under the guise of “personal development”, “security training”, and even promises of Russian or Canadian citizenship.

◼️ Calls for Nestlé to remove sugar: A group of 20 African civil society organisations, including three from South Africa, have written an open letter to Nestlé demanding the company stop adding sugar to baby food products. This comes after an investigation by Swiss investigative outfit Public Eye found that 90% of Nestlé Cerelac, a popular baby cereal, sold in 20 African countries has sugar added.
