Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Withdrawal of US aid has hurt SA’s HIV programme: Public health experts have accused the government of being in denial about the consequences of the withdrawal of US aid. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has responded defiantly. In May, he stated that a record number of people had been initiated on ARVs over the previous months, a claim disputed by epidemiologists.

◼️ Experts reveal alarming findings from the Madlanga Commission: “We have come to know who the players are who have infiltrated the SAPS, and we’ve also come to know that the judiciary is not as innocent as we always thought,” Seepe said. “Something that should have been obvious to South Africans is that judges are simply mere mortals, but it was deliberate to make judges appear like they’re superhuman beings, as if they’re incorruptible.

◼️ The real source of SA’s firearms crisis: Broodryk said Saps has lost an estimated 18 000 to 20 000 firearms in the past decade, while the SANDF lost at least 57 R4/R5 rifles that disappeared between 2017 and 2020. An additional 19 assault rifles were stolen from an army base in 2019. “Ammunition and even grenades have gone missing, with recovery rates near zero,” he said.

◼️ New rules coming for electricity prices in SA: The court found that NERSA’s approval of municipal electricity tariffs without proper cost studies and public participation was unconstitutional, paving the way for stricter rules and greater transparency in future pricing decisions. During the court challenge, NERSA tried to argue in court that municipal electricity customers have no right to know what their councils pay Eskom for electricity.

◼️ SA’s big light bulb ban: South African retailers can no longer sell light bulbs with luminous efficiency lower than 90 lumens per watt (lm/W), which includes most compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) and incandescent bulbs. Former trade and industry minister Ibrahim Patel published South Africa’s new light bulb regulations in May 2024.
