Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Mkhwanazi to stand before parliamentary committee: Mkhwanazi’s allegations have implicated several high-profile figures. He accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of interference. He also claimed the late former minister Nathi Mthethwa tried to stop Richard Mdluli’s prosecution. These serious claims form the basis of the work to be done by the parliamentary committee.

◼️ Trump is considering prioritizing white South Africans: Trump is considering cutting the number of refugee places to as few as 7,500 from a target of 125,000 refugee admissions last year under the Biden administration, according to officials, with the places mostly going to members of the Afrikaner white minority from South Africa.

◼️ Rights of undocumented and pregnant pupils: Moralists and anti-illegal immigrant advocates must eat humble pie: the new school admission regulations still require that pregnant pupils and undocumented migrant children cannot be refused admission to public schools.

◼️ Notorious international cartel moving in SA: Earlier this week, six people appeared in the magistrate’s court in Volksrust, a rural part of Mpumalanga, on charges of running a crystal methamphetamine laboratory. The police estimate that the project is worth approximately R350 million. The striking thing, however, was that the six people who were arrested, five of them are Mexican nationals. Rademeyer explained that this case is not an isolated incident. “There have been three incidents in the last few years.

◼️ South Africans dumping TV licences: The SABC has depleted most of its remaining cash and reported a loss of R253 million. Additionally, it was unable to collect approximately 85% of the TV licence fees it billed for in the previous financial year. CEO Nomsa Chabeli stated that the organisation is experiencing difficulties due to delays in implementing changes to its funding model.
