Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ Global rush for critical minerals puts African countries at risk: Mantashe called on African governments to act collectively, particularly in relation to minerals that had become central to global economic and security agendas. “There is growing recognition that reliance on raw mineral exports leaves countries vulnerable to price volatility, external policy shifts and geopolitical leverage exercised by major consuming nations,” he said.

◼️ SAFM presenter, four others back in court: SAFM radio presenter Nonkululeko Mantula and four co-accused are expected appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on allegations they recruited South Africans to fight for Russia in its war with Ukraine. The group was arrested in December by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks.

◼️SA once again fails to shift perceptions of corruption: The report also reveals that the inability of governments to act against corruption by introducing new laws or strengthening existing ones to combat it- and the more disturbing pattern of restricting freedoms of expression, association and assembly – makes it harder for civil society organisations and whistle-blowers to speak out against corruption freely and safely.

◼️ Another peanut butter brand pulled from shelves: Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by certain fungi that can contaminate agricultural crops, including peanuts, and is regulated in South Africa due to the health risks it poses. According to the NCC, the affected products failed to meet the quality standards set out under the Department of Health’s Regulation R.1145, which governs the tolerance of fungus-produced toxins in foodstuffs.

◼️ SA’s first electric SUV under R600,000: The brand recently announced plans to roll out 20 dealers across South Africa to provide a “complete iCaur experience” from the outset. The first two models that will be available in South Africa are the fully-electric iCaur V23 and a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) called the 03T. The most affordable option will be the boxy V23, a Land Rover Defender-like SUV aimed at young urban drivers seeking an adventurous aesthetic.
