Mon 20 October 2025:
Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ ‘No Comment’ – Ramaphosa on Mchunu’s PKTT claims: “I will await the conclusion of the proceedings and the submission of the commission’s report before making any comments,” Ramaphosa said. The president’s remarks come amid escalating controversy over the December 2024 disbandment of the PKTT — a specialised unit tasked with investigating politically motivated killings, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

◼️ Social unrest warning: South Africa’s law enforcement agencies, plagued by corruption and mismanagement, are increasingly unable to contain widespread organised crime and rising social instability. This may be exacerbated by the ANC’s weakening grip on power, with its patronage networks fracturing as the party appears to be losing South Africans’ support. Rising political instability is coupled with increased social discontent, as communities protest poor service delivery.

◼️ Over 470 public schools in SA do not offer mathematics: “This situation exposes a broader structural problem within our education system: inequity in access, misalignment of teacher skills with subject needs, and insufficient investment in resources,” Maimane said.

◼️ ANC denies: DA head of policy Mathew Cuthbert told the media on Monday that since the ANC’s B-BBEE policy was introduced in 2003 conditions have significantly worsened for the people it claims to represent. “The unemployment rate for black South Africans was 36% in the last quarter of 2024, compared to 7% among white South Africans.

◼️ Fruit juices in SA are getting a free ride: Often, 100% fruit juices are seen as healthier alternatives to sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened drinks. But growing research shows this may not be true. A 2023 meta-analysis of 72 published studies involving over 3 million people found that drinking fruit juice does not lower the risk of type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. It was instead linked to a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases.
