Tue 24 March 2026:
Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Fuel rationing sets in as farmers battle under supply shortages: The United States and Israel’s war in Iran has ignited global panic, with the conflict expected to severely impact fuel prices and supply and businesses across the Garden Route, Klein Karoo and Hessequa. Last week, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy insisted the country’s fuel supply remains stable in the immediate term, despite extreme volatility in global energy markets triggered by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

◼️ Jobs-for-comrades scheme: Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has called on the Special Investigating Unit to conduct lifestyle audits in her department after a whistleblower dossier alleged that there was a “jobs-for-comrades” scheme involving officials and ANC politicians.

◼️ Social grant changes for SA next week: The social assistance grant increases are in line with the changes announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana at the 2026 Budget Speech in February. Around 8.2 million people currently benefit from the SRD grant, with 26.5 million grant recipients overall. South Africans can expect the SRD grant to undergo significant changes in 2026 as it is reformed and developed into a permanent jobseeker’s grant throughout the year.

◼️ New era for speeding fines: “The technology has caught up, and the days of fines just disappearing are definitely long gone,” Berman said. “Even if you are not a driver of the vehicle, you may be the responsible person of a fleet. You may get a big surprise.” He also warned that motorists who have failed to pay outstanding fines could face arrest if their fines have escalated to a warrant.

◼️ iPhone users in SA a prime target: iPhones are attacked via infected websites that users visit in Safari. When a user visits one of these infected sites, multiple exploits are run to obtain kernel read and write access. Code is then executed through a main orchestrator component that injects a JavaScript engine into iOS services that would normally need admin access. The engine breaches App Access, Wi-Fi, Springboard, Keychain, and iCloud, then runs a data-stealing module.
