Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Will the G20 presidency gavel change hands today? “The agreement is that we should do it low-key. It’s not just a South African issue; the US also doesn’t want a very big handover event. So we will hand over at the level of a senior official from Dirco to the US chargé d’affaires. That will most likely take place tomorrow (Tuesday),” Dirco Director-General, Zane Dangor, said.

◼️ How Big Tobacco stalls SA’s smoking and vaping law: Research among young people suggests the country isn’t likely to kick its nicotine habit soon. A 2024 study found that close to four in ten (37%) learners from high schools in urban areas across eight of the country’s nine provinces have vaped at least once, and one in six said they had used e-cigarettes in the last 30 days. Researchers described it as a “vaping crisis”.

◼️ Zille’s GNU warning for SA: The so-called government of national unity (GNU) has weathered a series of crises, with its main members sparring over tax policy and the adoption of contentious land-expropriation, health insurance and education legislation. “I’m not confident that it will last until 2029,” Helen Zille, the chairwoman of the DA’s federal council, said of the GNU.

A customer whose data was exposed forwarded Netstar’s communication to MyBroadband. The firm is required to inform impacted customers under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
