Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ SA readies revamped Transformation Fund offering big BEE points incentive: The fund will be in a special purpose vehicle incubated by the National Empowerment Fund, targeting a small set of priority sectors — renewable energy, manufacturing, agro-processing, logistics and digital infrastructure — chosen for their ability to deliver jobs and industrial impact. The fund will offer grants, loans, equity and business development support. The document also shows the fund will be governed by a minister-appointed board, supported by a public-private investment committee.

◼️ Half a billion rand to repair the Kruger : The cost of repairing flood damage at the Kruger National Park has risen to over R500 million and could reach as high as R700 million, according to Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Willie Aucamp.

◼️ It would cost R400 billion to fix SA’s water crisis: Municipalities are supposed to fund their own maintenance of drinking water infrastructure with the revenue they generate from water sales. However, large amounts of water go through municipal systems without earning any money. This “non-revenue water” is driven by leaks and bursts due to ageing infrastructure, billing issues, and free water supplied to poor households.

◼️ Call to change the name of major province in SA: KwaZulu-Natal has seen the highest number of name changes in democratic South Africa, followed by the Eastern Cape and Limpopo. Supporters of name changes argue that they are necessary to undo the legacy of colonialism and apartheid, restore indigenous names, and affirm cultural identity. The Democratic Alliance has warned that changing names can cost millions of rands, as governments must update road signs, official documents, maps, websites, uniforms, vehicles, and branding.

◼️ Court dismisses husband seeking quick divorce to marry new partner: However, Judge Stuart David James Wilson rejected the request, finding that the dissolution of a marriage in community of property is conceptually inseparable from the division of the joint estate. Unlike marriages out of community of property, Wilson said, there are not two estates to disentangle but a single undivided estate jointly owned by both spouses.
