Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ We won’t beg Trump: “When America did not support our struggle, we didn’t sit and cry, OR [Tambo] went to the Soviet Union and we got support, so it is the same thing happening today. When the West troubles us, we must know we have other friends where we are going to continue and trade.” Mashatile also said South Africa should ensure that the African free trade benefited South Africa as opposed to working with the countries of Brics and the new market.

◼️ South Africans stranded: It is alleged that criminal syndicates are trafficking people to use in illegal scam operations and related activities. Last week, a group of hostages rescued by Myanmar soldiers, who later allegedly demanded ransom to release them, overpowered the soldiers and escaped.

◼️ South Africa’s water crisis: South Africa’s major metros, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban, are tackling water repair and maintenance operations this month as they try to keep its ageing infrastructure afloat while balancing supply disruptions, illegal connections, and financial instability.

◼️ EU investment in SA soars as ties with Trump’s US shrink: This month, when President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the EU’s Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen announced a new set of investments from EU member states into South Africa under the Global Gateway, which boosted the pledged EU investment from €4.7-billion to almost €12.billion.

◼️ Warning to people in SA who use Gmail: “After normalising and deduplicating the data, 183 million unique email addresses remained, each linked to the website where the credentials were captured, and the password used.” He recommended that people change their email passwords and enable two-factor authentication to ensure their accounts aren’t compromised further.
