Tue 30 December 2025:
Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ SA concern over Israel’s recognition of Somaliland: “We uphold the African Union’s principle of uti possidetis the sanctity of inherited borders as the continent’s essential safeguard against conflict. We distinguish unequivocally between decolonisation and secession. The former restores sovereignty; the latter dismantles it,” the Ministry said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would seek immediate cooperation with Somaliland in agriculture, health, technology and the economy.

◼️ SA ranked world’s most generous nation in new global study: Ireland and Canada completed the top five, followed by Portugal, Greece and the United Kingdom. Australia and Mexico rounded off the top 10 most generous countries.“Generosity is often seen purely through a financial lens, but our study shows it’s much more than that. The countries that rank highest aren’t just those who give the most money, but those where people consistently show up for others with kindness, empathy and everyday acts of support,” Riley said.

◼️ Has the EFF lost its flavour: “Does Julius Malema still resonate with a broad constituency of young people, as the party did twelve years ago when the EFF positioned itself as the voice of the young and marginalised?” He also questioned Malema’s style of politics, which appears to be rooted in disruption, militant confrontation, and anti-establishment theatrics.

◼️ Good news for car owners: This is according to SAPS crime data for the second quarter of 2025/26, which shows that when comparing the quarter’s numbers to the same period over previous years, fewer vehicle-related crimes are being processed by the police year-on-year. The most stolen cars generally have one thing in common – they are popular, yet inconspicuous – making them either to both steal and resell.

◼️ Emaciated pony dies after being abandoned at animal welfare society gate: “This pony was skeletal – his ribs and scarred hip bones were protruding, and his right eye socket had been ground down due to him thrashing around on the ground in pain. There is no doubt that he had been subjected to the worst forms of neglect imaginable. How and why anyone could be so cruel defies logic,” Perrins said. The case has sparked renewed calls from animal welfare groups for stricter action against animal neglect and abandonment.
