Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ United States reveals five demands for SA: Speaking at the Biznews Conference in Hermanus, Bozell said that he has been in the country in his official capacity for three-and-a-half weeks and has already learned of the complexity of “the situation” here. However, he said he has also learned that the South African government is not internally aligned on how it wants to deal with international partners and support businesses.

◼️ ‘Helen Zille will never be Joburg mayor’: The gloves are off in the mayoral contest between Mashaba and Zille, the DA’s candidate. And its not just a political race. It’s personal. It’s about settling scores and the battle is expected to become increasingly fierce as the country prepares for local government elections expected later this year, or by February 2027 at the latest. Mashaba also made the startling claim that there are “two ANCs”.

◼️ Mugabe’s son seeks plea deal after abandoning bail: During Wednesday’s proceedings, Advocate Laurance Hodes, who represents both accused together with attorney Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, informed the court that the defence would no longer pursue bail. “My instructions are not to proceed with the bail applications,” he said. The accused’s arrest follows a shooting at the Mugabe residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, on 19 February. A 23-year-old gardener was seriously injured in the incident.

◼️ ‘No immediate risk’ of fuel shortages in SA: That is the message on Wednesday night from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR). “While prolonged geopolitical tensions may exert pressure on international oil prices, the Department wishes to assure the public that there is currently no immediate risk of fuel shortages in South Africa,” the department said.

◼️ How to protect your child from inappropriate internet content: The World Health Organization recommends that children under two years old not get any sedentary screen time at all. Dr Skye Scott, a GP with a special interest in mental health, explains that digital content designed to “give you a kick” stimulates small, developing brains unnaturally. “It develops a type of dopamine-seeking behaviour in children,” she says. This can lay an early foundation for digital addiction later on.
