Wed 13 August 2025:

Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ Ramaphosa-Mbeki feud reignites: The experts said the tension between Mbeki and Ramaphosa was exacerbated when Mbeki, as the ANC’s first chief negotiator assisted by Jacob Zuma, were removed and replaced with Ramaphosa, who was assisted by Mohammed Valli Moosa. ANC insiders at the time saw this as a snub for Mbeki and Zuma and an embrace of Ramaphosa, whom they claimed emerged from nowhere into Nelson Mandela’s inner circle after his release from jail.

◼️ SA’s success story: Home to 44 000 African savanna elephants and a population that continues to grow, South Africa’s conservation efforts have demonstrated success when compared to the decline of elephant numbers in some other countries. World Elephant Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness of the urgent need to protect and manage the world’s elephants.

◼️ SA hits back at the US: South Africa’s government slammed a report published by US President Donald Trump’s administration that said the human-rights situation in the African nation “significantly worsened” last year. It also raised concern about alleged extra-judicial killings and repression of racial minorities.

◼️ Cellphone scams and cybercrime on the rise in SA: If you’ve ever received a phone call, email or SMS pretending to be from your bank or mobile provider, only to later discover it was a fake, you’re not alone. A confluence of leaked personal data, weak enforcement of laws and the rise of cheap AI tools means South Africans are facing more scam attempts than ever before.

◼️ Cellphone signal blockers in SA jails: South African correctional services minister Pieter Groenewald shared the example of cellphone use in South African prisons, which results in a lot of crime still being conducted from within prisons. “Yes, there are many cellphones in our facilities, and people ask: well, why don’t you use a signal blocker?” he said.
