◼️ Zuma’s MK Party’s year of chaos: The most sensational scandal occurred on November 28, when Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, Zuma’s daughter and an MKP MP, resigned. This came amid allegations she recruited 17 South African men for “bodyguard training” in Russia, only for them to be conscripted into the Ukraine war. Families protested outside Durban City Hall, and the Democratic Alliance filed formal charges.

◼️ DJ Warras murder- Two alleged killers in court: The arrests followed a pre-dawn police operation at the Morafe Hostel in Soweto on Monday, December 22, during which the two suspects were taken in for questioning. SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili later confirmed that both men had been formally charged with murder.

◼️ South Africans are paying more tax than ever before: Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says that South Africa’s tax-to-GDP ratio is the highest it has ever been, with taxpayers struggling under the worst tax burden on record. “A broad tax base, combined with relatively low tax rates and improved tax administration, supports sustainable revenue-raising and economic growth over the long term,” Godongwana said.

◼️ Madlanga commission must lead to change in criminal justice system: Mkhwanazi told the media that he was pleased that the problems with South Africa’s criminal justice system is being aired in public. On 6 July, Mkhwanazi stunned the country when he held a media briefing and alleged that the judiciary, politicians and senior police officials were colluding with criminal networks.

◼️ Truecaller fraud warning: Caller ID platform Truecaller has warned South Africans to be on guard as the country is entering its highest scam-risk period in five years. The company explained that South Africa is approaching the most dangerous period of the year for scam calls, SMS fraud and impersonation scams. New communication-risk data also revealed a sharp increase in fraudulent activity between November and January. According to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) and industry-wide fraud monitoring reports, fraud incidents have risen 32% year-on-year.
