Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ ‘Sufficient’ jet fuel in Sasol’s drums: Sources at the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources previously told Moneyweb that government is in continuous talks with oil companies to avert a day-zero situation. Aviation expert and MD of Plane Talking Linden Birns says the fluidity of the situation makes it difficult to project how long it could be before domestic airlines have to rethink their flight plans, if at all.

◼️ R360m SAPS tender scandal: Testifying before the Madlanga Commission in February, Matjeng said that none of the money Matlala gave her was a bribe to secure the R360million SAPS contract. She said he showered her with gifts, which included Ozempic, a weight loss drug, that cost around R4,500 per unit. When questioned about R300,000 she received from Matlala, she told the commission it was unrelated to her job.

◼️ South Africa must stop BEE: South Africa’s mining output has been steadily declining over the past 20 years, with little to no new exploration occurring in the country despite evidence of significant mineral deposits. The decline in output has led the country to miss the full benefits of recent commodity booms and to lose thousands of jobs in the sector. South Africa’s mining sector has lost around 300,000 jobs over the past decade as old mines are shuttered, without any new projects to replace them.

◼️ Thousands of Citro-Soda packs pulled amid contamination fears: According to Sahpra, the recall follows the identification of a potential risk of foreign material contamination during an inspection at the Adcock Ingram Clayville manufacturing facility in Johannesburg. Citro-Soda is a fast-acting, effervescent granule treatment used to treat heartburn, stomach acidity, and urinary tract infections.

◼️ New number plate price-fixing warning in SA: “On the one hand, the expectation is created that the new number plates will be rolled out at any moment,” Boshoff said. “On the other hand, we find out that we are paying exorbitant amounts for number plates.” He added that if the number plate “cartel” is already lining its pockets with high profits from the current number plate scheme, it is likely excited about making millions through the mandatory sale of new plates.
