Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Ramaphosa allies block surprise exit plan: The ANC had been underperforming in the polls since the 2009 election, after Zuma was elected at the tumultuous Polokwane national conference in late 2007. Ramaphosa’s entrance has not helped the party’s fortunes and, instead, it dropped dramatically from 57% in 2019 to 40% in last year’s national election.

◼️ New US bill threatens SA’s economy: The proposal challenges Pretoria’s geopolitical stance, particularly its engagements with China and Russia. South African officials say negotiations with Washington continue and insist there is still bipartisan backing for AGOA’s renewal. The bill marks the latest move by US Republicans to pressure South Africa amid rising diplomatic tensions.

◼️ Mashatile blames water crisis on municipal mismanagement and corruption: According to Mashatile, the Department of Water and Sanitation has reported a severe decline in the ability of many municipalities to deliver water to residents. “This has resulted in a decline in the national average for reliability to 68%, and deteriorating water quality in about 60% of water-supply systems,” he said.
