Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:
◼️ Call to remain vigilant: The Brigadier added that women are also falling victim to spiked drinks as a number of cases have been reported nationwide of women who have been found raped, assaulted or dead while coming back from taverns, shebeens, nightclubs and other places of recreation. Some are picked up by strangers at these drinking outlets and some even leave with their intimate partners or other people known to them.

◼️ Eskom storm warning: The power utility Eskom has recorded a 40% increase in outages over the festive season, primarily driven by severe weather conditions. The group has warned that the adverse weather is expected to continue into 2026, with heavy rainfall expected through March. Thousands of customers had been left without power over the past few weeks as Eskom worked to restore services following the storms. Despite the sharp spike in weather-related service interruptions, the group has not experienced significant outages at its power stations in the affected provinces, nor has it had any issues with wet coal.

◼️ Mandela’s economic legacy destroyed: Mandela described how the president of the IMF visited South Africa and stated that the reason the rand was unstable was that South Africa’s foreign reserves were very low. “I am prepared to help you, to give you funds,” the former IMF president told Mandela during his South African visit. However, Mandela refused. “The difficulty with you is that you impose conditions which violate the sovereignty of a country,” Mandela told him.
