Sat 17 May 2025:

Lebanese singer Mohammad Hadi Saleh is accused of providing information to Israel in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars, according to a legal indictment.

A popular Hezbollah-affiliated singer is being prosecuted in Lebanon after being accused of spying for Israel and complicity in the killings of Lebanese citizens in exchange for cash.

Proceedings against Mohammad Hadi Saleh began on Wednesday, following his arrest several weeks ago, with the trial being presided over by military investigative judge Fadi Sawan, a judicial source confirmed to L’Orient-Le Jour.

Prior to this, rumours of Saleh’s arrest and prosecution had already circulated on social media, with news outlets citing Hezbollah sources confirming them. One source said the singer had been working for Israel for “several months”.

Saleh, a resident of Beirut’s southern suburbs, which are a stronghold of Hezbollah, is alleged to have received $23,000 from Israel for his services, Janoubia reported, citing an indictment.

The singer had reportedly fallen into debt after investing in stocks, and came to the attention of authorities when he defrauded $18,000 from a victim. After a search of his phone, evidence of collaboration with Israel was found.

While his family initially denied the reports, confirmation of his prosecution on Wednesday has led to further revelations.

Local media reports allege that intelligence provided by Saleh led to the deaths of several Hezbollah figures.

The deaths of Hezbollah military official Hassan Bdeir and his son Ali in early April were linked to Saleh, according to Janoubia. Saleh is also allegedly connected to a series of strikes on Lebanon’s Nabatieh region earlier in May.

The singer is rumoured to have posed and taken photographs alongside Hezbollah figures who were to be targeted by Israel, according to social media reports.

Some have denied these claims, however, including pro-Hezbollah reporters and public figures.

Hezbollah’s most recent war with Israel exposed major flaws in the group’s organisation and security, leading to the assassinations of leader Hassan Nasrallah and his presumed successor Hashem Safieddine in 2024.

A string of other assassinations of the group’s senior commanders dealt it a heavy blow, severely undermining its once formidable position within Lebanese politics and society.

Analysts suggest Israel’s advanced military technology was not enough to inflict such huge damage on Hezbollah, but that it also had to rely on spies, specifically within the Lebanese group’s support base and community circles.

Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency had also recruited a network of collaborators to document the aftermath of airstrikes, monitor search and rescue operations, and confirm the outcomes of these attacks, Lebanese security sources say.

Several people suspected of collaborating with Israel have been arrested by Lebanese authorities.
