Uttarakhand Police arrested Utkarsh Kumar Singh from Motihari, Bihar, on Monday, February 9, for allegedly posting a viral video offering a ₹2 lakh reward to anyone who kills gym owner Deepak Kumar, popularly known as Mohammad Deepak, and “brings him back to Hinduism” by explaining Sanatan Dharma.

The video, which surfaced on social media, showed Singh waving a bundle of currency notes while making the threatening declaration in Hindi. Deepak filed a complaint at Kotdwar Police Station on Sunday, February 8, after spotting the post, prompting police to register an FIR under Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for criminal intimidation.

Using technical surveillance and coordination with Bihar Police, authorities traced and detained Singh near his residence. During interrogation, he claimed the act stemmed from jealousy over Deepak’s rising social media popularity.

Singh insisted he posted the video only to boost views and engagement on his channel, denying any real criminal intent. Police are proceeding with further legal action.

Deepak gained national attention in late January after confronting Bajrang Dal activists harassing an elderly Muslim shopkeeper, Vakeel Ahmed, over his store’s name including “Baba.” When challenged, Deepak introduced himself as “Mohammad Deepak,” leading the group to disperse. The incident video went viral, earning him praise for promoting harmony but also backlash.

The controversy has severely impacted his livelihood. Hulk Gym in Kotdwar, once bustling with around 150 members, now sees only about 15 visitors daily. Deepak, who rents the entire floor for ₹40,000 monthly and supports his family as the sole breadwinner, also pays a ₹16,000 home loan installment.

He expressed understanding of people’s fear but highlighted the financial strain, noting that good deeds often go unrecognized amid the fallout.
