Wed 15 December 2021:
In images that will break your heart, the impact of Kenya’s drought on the country’s giraffe population is portrayed.
The most popular shot is of one of six giraffes laying dead inside the Sabuli Wildlife Conservancy in Wajir.
“got caught in the mud as they went to drink from a practically dried-up reservoir nearby.” according to reports.
They died as a result of their weakness as a result of not eating or drinking.
The bodies were taken to a site where photographs would be taken.
Kenya’s drought management authority warned in September that 2.1 million Kenyans were on the danger of starvation owing to a severe drought that had affected half of the country.
Water sources for both people and livestock have dried up, forcing families to walk longer distances and causing tensions among communities, which has led to an increase in inter-communal conflict.
In some counties, families have started to adopt extreme coping mechanisms. Cases of child marriage have been reported in some areas and school dropouts reported in Kilifi, Kwale and Tana River, where children are engaging in labour or survival activities to support their families, including producing charcoal to generate income or walking in search of water.
On Tuesday, the United Nations declared that 2.9 million people remain in severe need of humanitarian aid.
It went on to say that some sections of Kenya had just had some of the worst rains in decades.
