HOSTAGE CRISIS ENDS AFTER RUSSIAN FORCES KILL SEVERAL ISIL-LINKED ASSAILANTS AT ROSTOV-ON-DON DETENTION CENTER

Sun 16 June 2024:

Russian special forces freed two prison guards and killed several hostage-takers at a pre-trial detention center in Rostov-on-Don. The guards were seized by six detainees earlier on Sunday. Initially, negotiations were attempted, but the siege ended with a special operation.

“The criminals were eliminated,” stated Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service, confirming the hostages were unharmed.

The incident comes nearly three months after gunmen killed at least 144 when they opened fire at a concert hall near Moscow in the deadliest attack on Russian soil since the Beslan massacre a decade ago.

Hundreds more were injured.

The hostage-takers reportedly had links to ISIL, with three previously convicted on terrorism charges. Footage showed ambulances arriving and sounds of gunfire. Images on social media depicted hostage-takers with ISIL-like headbands and wielding knives. The detainees had broken into a guard room, demanding a car for escape.

RT reported that three of the hostage-takers had already been sentenced on “terrorism” charges, including disseminating extremist information and plotting to blow up a Russian courthouse.

Journalists on the scene reported the sounds of gunfire, while multiple ambulances were seen arriving at the prison in footage on social media.

The exact number of killed hostage-takers is unclear. This incident follows a recent deadly ISIL-claimed attack near Moscow, highlighting ongoing security threats.

Earlier, Russian state news agency TASS, quoting unnamed sources in law enforcement, had said that six hostage-takers were in the central courtyard of the Rostov-on-Don region’s Detention Center No 1, armed with a penknife, a rubber baton and a fire axe.
