Tue 26 November 2024:
Chinese tech powerhouse Huawei has launched its Mate 70 smartphone series, a bold step toward reclaiming its position in the premium smartphone market. Announced on Tuesday, the Mate 70 marks Huawei’s clean break from U.S. technology and its continued rise amid geopolitical challenges.
Huawei’s Mate 70 is more than a smartphone; it is a symbol of resilience and innovation in the face of adversity. With cutting-edge features, a proprietary OS, and a competitive edge in pricing, Huawei is redefining the premium smartphone landscape while charting a path of technological independence.
The Mate 70 succeeds last year’s Mate 60 series, a pivotal launch signaling Huawei’s resurgence in the high-end smartphone arena, challenging Apple’s dominance. The comeback follows years of struggles due to U.S. export restrictions, which deeply affected its global operations.
Competing Head-On with Apple
Priced from 5,499 yuan ($758), the Mate 70 directly rivals Apple’s iPhone 16, starting at 5,999 yuan in China. Despite competitive pricing, Huawei aims to lure users with innovative features and significant technological advancements.
At an event in Shenzhen, Huawei’s Consumer Business Chairman, Richard Yu, described the Mate 70 as “the most powerful Mate phone ever.” Featuring a cutting-edge satellite paging system, enhanced processing capabilities, and Huawei’s proprietary HarmonyOS Next, the phone boasts a 40% performance improvement over its predecessors.
The Mate 70 series debuts Huawei’s HarmonyOS Next operating system, marking a complete departure from Android. Unlike earlier HarmonyOS versions that retained Android compatibility, HarmonyOS Next is a self-reliant ecosystem. With over 15,000 applications onboard and plans to expand to 100,000, Huawei is building a robust platform for its users.

Advanced Chips Amid Sanctions
Teardowns of the Mate 70 and other Huawei devices reveal cutting-edge chips manufactured by China’s SMIC, a testament to the nation’s growing semiconductor prowess despite stringent U.S. export controls.
Huawei remains tight-lipped about its chip technology, but sources suggest the inclusion of its Kirin 9100 chipset in higher-end Mate 70 models. However, production limitations might restrict these chips to select variants.
Huawei’s resurgence is reflected in its market performance. Ranked as China’s second-largest smartphone vendor in Q3 2024, the company has shipped over 10 million units for four consecutive quarters, signaling strong consumer demand and confidence in its products.
