HUNDREDS VANISH IN MEDITERRANEAN’S “INVISIBLE SHIPWRECKS”

A sharp rise in migrant deaths and disappearances in the Mediterranean is being compounded by a growing lack of transparency from authorities, making it increasingly difficult to verify casualties and assess the scale of the crisis along one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 682 migrants were confirmed missing as of March 16, 2026, marking the deadliest start to a year on record. However, humanitarian organizations warn that the actual number is likely significantly higher due to gaps in reporting and limited access to official data.

The phenomenon of “invisible shipwrecks”, cases where boats disappear without trace, has become more difficult to document. Julia Black of the IOM’s Missing Migrants Project said the agency is increasingly unable to verify incidents, with more than 400 additional cases in 2026 classified as unverifiable. In 2025, at least 1,500 migrants were reported missing without confirmation of their fate.

Human rights groups say Italy, Tunisia and Malta have restricted access to information on search and rescue operations, limiting the ability of journalists and organizations to confirm incidents. Matteo Villa of the Italian Institute for International Political Studies described the trend as “a strategy of silence.”

Authorities in all three countries did not respond to repeated requests for clarification on policies governing the release of migration data. The lack of transparency has contributed to reduced media coverage, as reports cannot be independently verified.

Funding cuts and operational restrictions have also weakened the capacity of humanitarian organizations to fill information gaps. “We’ve seen the restriction of access for humanitarian actors … and now we’re seeing even the restriction of information,” Black said.

The reporting gap became particularly acute following Cyclone Harry in late January, which brought winds of 100 km/h and waves up to 9 meters. Human rights group Refugees in Libya reported more than 1,000 people missing after boats departed from Tunisia’s Sfax region.

Frontex, the European Union’s border agency, said it detected eight boats carrying about 160 migrants between January 14 and 24. It confirmed that six were rescued by Italian authorities, but the fate of the remaining two boats remains unknown.

A distress alert issued on January 24 referenced eight small vessels carrying around 380 people between Tunisia and Italy’s Lampedusa, though authorities declined to provide further details. Only one known survivor from the cyclone-related incidents has been documented, rescued on January 22 after drifting at sea.

The current information gaps reflect a longer-term trend. Italy’s coast guard ceased publishing detailed migration rescue data in 2020, after scaling back from monthly to quarterly reports.

Tunisia stopped releasing interception data in June 2024, citing security concerns.

These shifts followed a 2023 agreement between Tunisia and European partners to curb migration, accompanied by enforcement measures that included detentions and expulsions of migrants. Analysts say the reduction in publicly available data has coincided with efforts to manage political narratives around migration flows.

Despite nearly 5,000 migrants arriving in Italy in 2026, according to interior ministry statistics, official communication on rescues has been minimal. The lack of data has left families searching for missing relatives without answers and has complicated efforts to document deaths at sea.
