HUNGARY ‘MUST ARREST’ NETANYAHU AND HAND HIM TO THE ICC: AMNESTY

Amnesty International says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must be arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court should he visit Hungary or any other states that are members of the court.

The rights group made the comment in response to reports that Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has invited Netanyahu to the country this week, an invitation that “shows contempt for international law and confirms that alleged war criminals wanted by the ICC are welcome on the streets of a European Union member state”, Erika Guevara-Rosas, the head of Amnesty’s Global Research, Advocacy and Policy, said in a statement.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu is an alleged war criminal, who is accused of using starvation as a method of warfare, intentionally attacking civilians and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts,” she added.

“As a member state of the ICC, Hungary must arrest him if he travels to the country and hand him over to the court. Any trip he takes to an ICC member state that does not end in his arrest would embolden Israel to commit further crimes against Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

The ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant last November, triggering an obligation for the court’s member states to arrest him and turn him over should he travel to their jurisdictions.

But several European countries that are members of the ICC — including France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Hungary — have suggested they would decline to do so in defiance of the court.
