Thu 03 February 2022:
In retaliation for Berlin’s decision to ban Russian station RT DE, Russia shut down German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) in Moscow. Russia announced that DW’s accreditation would be revoked.
Moscow said that the German station would no longer be broadcast in Russia and that it would be declared a “foreign agent,” a term with a negative connotation in the Soviet era.
The Russian foreign ministry announced that German officials engaged in the banning of RT DE would be denied admission to Russia.
Russia and Germany are at odds over the Ukraine crisis, which has heightened tensions between Russia and the West. The tensions between Germany and Russia may be the first political test for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was recently elected.
The MABB media watchdog and the Commission for Licensing and Supervision (ZAK) of media institutions in Germany said this week that RT DE would not be able to broadcast in Germany using a Serbian license, an announcement that enraged Russia.
Russia’s foreign ministry described Germany’s decision to ban Russian broadcaster as “unfriendly” in a statement on its website explaining its retaliatory steps.
There was no quick response from DW.
The announcement comes amid a crackdown on “foreign agent” media outlets in Russia. It uses the phrase to refer to foreign-funded organizations that are involved in political action.
