INDIA CASES SURGE PAST 500,000, MALAYSIA COVID-19 CASES DROP TO 191

NEW DELHI, India (AA) – With 18,552 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, India’s nationwide tally on Saturday crossed the 0.5 million mark, the biggest surge so far, the Health Ministry said.

Meanwhile, the death toll touched 15,700 with 384 more fatalities.

A total of 295,881 people in the country have gone on to make a recovery.

On Friday, Delhi recorded 3,390 cases in the biggest single-day spike, taking lead over the worst-hit financial capital Mumbai. The case-count in the capital has hit 73,780, with 2,492 fatalities. 

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that testing capacity in the capital was increased four-fold to conduct 21,144 tests on Friday.

Malls in and around Delhi are expected to open next week after three months.

In most states, however, the number of recoveries are now higher than the number of active cases. 

Meanwhile, the eastern state of Jharkhand became the second state after West Bengal to extend the lockdown until July 31. 

Malaysia COVID-19 cases drop to 191

The number of active novel coronavirus cases dropped to 191 in Malaysia, according to health officials.

General Directorate of Malaysian Health Ministry said cases increased to 8,606 with six additional infections while recoveries reached 8,294 with 23 patients leaving hospitals.

A total of 121 patients died from the virus and the country did not report any deaths in the last 13 days.

Malaysia has reported a single-digit case increase for the last four days and hopes to announce the stop of the spread of the virus in July.

As part of COVID-19 measures, it declared a curfew March 18 and the normalization process began June 10.

Since originating in China last December, the pandemic has claimed more than 493,000 lives in 188 countries and regions.

More than 9.7 million cases have been reported worldwide, while an excess of 4.9 million patients have recovered, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
