INDIA TO MOVE MIGRANT WORKERS IN KASHMIR TO ARMY CAMPS AFTER KILLINGS

Asia World

Sun 17 October 2021:

After several Indian migrant workers were killed by militants in Kashmir, the police commander on the Indian side of the disputed territory announced on Sunday that vulnerable Indian migrant workers will be relocated to army and police camps for security.

After three laborers from the eastern state of Bihar were shot in their rented accommodation on Sunday, two of whom died, Vijay Kumar said he had ordered his officers to relocate the employees.

It was unclear how many of the tens of thousands of Indians working in Kashmir from other states would be affected, if they would be restricted to camps, or whether the directive would be mandatory.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the killings on Sunday, or for the shooting deaths of two other migrant workers the day before.

Muslim-majority India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir, although it is divided between them.

The Indian-ruled territory has been the scene of a decades-long armed insurgency that has only recently began to target migrant workers.

Islamabad is accused by New Delhi of helping the extremists.

Pakistan denies the accusation, claiming that it solely provides diplomatic and moral support to the people of Kashmir.
