INDIA WILL GIVE SHEIKH HASINA TIME TO DECIDE HER “FUTURE COURSE OF ACTION”

India has confirmed that Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is in New Delhi, according to sources from the ANI news agency.

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, during an all-party meeting in parliament regarding the situation in Bangladesh, stated that India wants to give the 76-year-old leader time to decide on her “future course of action.”

Hasina’s Flight and Resignation

Hasina fled Bangladesh on Monday following weeks of violent protests over government job quotas. Bangladesh’s military chief, Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman, announced that Hasina had resigned and that a transitional government would be formed.

Jaishankar mentioned that the Indian government is in communication with the Bangladesh army and will act appropriately when necessary. He shared updates on the situation on social media: “Briefed an All-Party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Appreciate the unanimous support and understanding that was extended.”

Proposed Interim Leadership

The student leaders heading the protest movement in Bangladesh have proposed Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus to lead the interim government.

Sheikh Hasina, who had been in power for 15 years, has yet to release any statement on the recent events. The ANI reported that the aircraft which brought Hasina to India has departed without her.
