Mon 07 July 2025:
Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki erupted on Monday, spewing thick columns of volcanic ash up to 18 kilometers (11 miles) into the sky, according to the country’s Geology Agency.
The eruption blanketed nearby villages with ash and triggered an avalanche of scorching gas clouds down the volcano’s slopes. No immediate casualties were reported.
The agency had raised the volcano’s alert status to the highest level following an earlier eruption on June 18.
At least nine people were killed and dozens were injured following an eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki last November.

The 1,584-meter (5,197-foot) mountain also erupted in March but caused no casualties.
It is a twin volcano with Mount Lewotobi Perempuan in the district of Flores Timur.
Indonesia has 120 active volcanoes and sits along the “Ring of Fire,” a string of seismic fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
Also, dozens of neighborhoods in the capital Jakarta were inundated due to heavy rain that has been pouring since Saturday, the local English daily Jakarta Globe reported on Monday.
Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki, a 1,584-meter stratovolcano on Flores Island, Indonesia, is one half of a twin volcano complex with the less active Lewotobi Perempuan.
Located in the seismically active “Ring of Fire,” it has a history of frequent eruptions due to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. Its eruptive history includes significant activity in the 19th and 20th centuries, with notable eruptions in 1921, 1935, and 2003.
A major eruption in May 2003 was highly explosive, accompanied by significant seismicity. Activity resumed in 2008 and 2009, with increased seismicity and minor plumes. In 2011, seismic activity spiked, raising alert levels, though no major eruption occurred.Since December 2023, an ongoing eruption has displaced thousands.
In November 2024, a series of eruptions killed nine, injured dozens, and forced 16,000 to evacuate, with molten debris destroying homes.
Eruptions in March, May, and June 2025 sent ash plumes up to 11 km, disrupting flights to Bali and closing local airports.
