Wed 28 August 2024:

Thousands of international students across Canada are taking to the streets in protest, fearing potential deportation due to recent federal immigration policy changes. Provinces like Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia are witnessing ongoing demonstrations as students demand the rollback of these controversial changes.

The Canadian government’s decision to reduce permanent residency nominations by 25% has left thousands of international students in a precarious situation. Many had invested their family’s life savings in hopes of securing permanent residency, only to be told they may have to leave the country abruptly. This unexpected change has thrown their futures into uncertainty.

Voices of Despair: Students Speak Out

Mehakdeep Singh, a former international student now facing deportation, voiced his frustration: “I spent six years taking risks to come to Canada. I studied, worked, paid taxes, and earned enough Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, but the government has taken advantage of us,” he told City News Toronto.

The Naujawan Support Network, a student advocacy group, warns that many students may be forcibly deported as their work permits expire later this year. The influx of students from countries like India and China has exacerbated Canada’s housing and healthcare crises, contributing to inflation and widespread dissatisfaction.

Ottawa’s Response: Capping Study Permits

In response to the growing crisis, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) plans to cap international student permit applications at 360,000 for 2024—a significant 35% reduction from the previous year. However, student groups like the International Sikh Student Organisation argue that Canada’s housing crisis is rooted in broader policy failures, not the presence of international students.

Indian students in Brampton are at the forefront of the protests, believing they are being unfairly targeted by Ottawa’s new policies. As the situation intensifies, the students are determined to fight for their rights and demand a more equitable approach from the Canadian government.
