Mon 13 December 2021:
Many people are always looking for good investment opportunities. Some of these individuals invest in stocks, while others choose gold.
However, according to a new study, buying Lego kits can potentially be more profitable.
According to the study, shopping for Lego sets can be a terrific approach to develop a solid financial portfolio.
The Millennium Falcon, Death Star II, and Imperial Star Destroyer from Star Wars, as well as the Taj Mahal, are among the most costly Lego kits.
From 1987 to 2015, the experts looked at the prices of 2,322 Lego kits.
Researchers from Russia’s Higher School of Economics discovered that investing in “more unusual goods whose purchase might seem less serious,” such as Lego sets and Barbie dolls, could yield beneficial returns.
Victoria Dobrynskaya, associate professor, economic sciences, HSE University, said, “We are used to thinking that people buy such items as jewellery, antiques or artworks as an investment.”
“However, there are other options, such as collectable toys. Tens of thousands of deals are made on the secondary Lego market.”
She said: “Even taking into account the small prices of most sets, this is a huge market that is not well known by traditional investors.”
“Sets produced 20-30 years ago make Lego fans nostalgic, and prices for them go through the roof,” Dobrynskaya added. “But despite the high profitability of Lego sets on the secondary market in general, not all sets are equally successful.
“One must be a real Lego fan to sort out the market nuances and see the investment potential in a particular set.”
Several deals are conducted on the secondary Lego market. It is a big market, which is not well-known to traditional investors.
According to the study, factors such as a limited production run, a collector special edition, and market scarcity drive up product costs over time.
Lego sets may yield a 10 percent to 11 percent yearly return, which is more than equities, bonds, or gold.
A Lego set’s value is only worth something if it’s been stored for more than three years.
