Iran has initiated a thorough investigation into the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas’ political office, and has arrested dozens of individuals potentially connected to the incident, as reported by the New York Times on Saturday.
CALLS FOR INVESTIGATIONS INTO IRAN INTELLIGENCE FAILURES FOLLOWING HANIYEH’S ASSASSINATION IN TEHRAN
Citing sources familiar with the investigation, the NYT reported that senior intelligence officers, military officials, and staff at a Tehran military-run guesthouse where Haniyeh was assassinated have been detained. The investigation is being led by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ (IRGC) specialized intelligence unit.

While Israel has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh’s killing and US officials deny involvement, Israeli forces are suspected to be behind the assassination. Some reports, including from Hamas and Iranian media, suggest Haniyeh was killed by a missile strike, while others indicate a bomb was smuggled into the secure facility.

Haniyeh’s Presence in Tehran
Haniyeh, who leads Hamas from Qatar, was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran’s new president. Following the attack, Iranian officials raided the IRGC-owned guesthouse, quarantined staff members, made arrests, and confiscated all electronic devices.

CCTV footage from the guesthouse has been thoroughly examined, and guest lists have been checked. Investigators believe Israeli Mossad agents involved in the assassination may still be in Iran. An IRGC member told the NYT that security protocols have been updated, security personnel guarding senior officials have been replaced, and electronic equipment like phones have been swapped out to enhance security measures.
