IRAN’S KHAMANEI WARNS OF ‘STRONG RECIPROCAL BLOW’ TO POTENTIAL US ATTACK

Middle East World

Mon 31 March 2025:

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued a stinging response to Trump’s message that Iran will face heavy US bombardment if it fails to reach a nuclear weapons deal.

“They threaten to attack us, which we don’t think is very probable, but if they commit any mischief they will surely receive a strong reciprocal blow,” Khamenei said of the US and its ally, Israel.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also responded to Trump’s threat, saying in a post on X that “an open threat of ‘bombing’ by a head of state against Iran is a shocking affront to the very essence of international peace and security.

“Violence breeds violence, peace begets peace. The US can choose the course and concede to consequences,” he added.

Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened military action against Iran, particularly over its nuclear program. Recently, on March 30, 2025, he told NBC News that if Iran doesn’t agree to a new nuclear deal, “there will be bombing, the likes of which they have never seen before.”

He also mentioned secondary tariffs as an alternative, a tactic he used in his first term to pressure Iran economically. This stems from his long-standing “maximum pressure” campaign, which began when he withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018, arguing it was too weak.

Trump believes Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons threatens global security and has vowed to stop it, even if it means war. His threats escalated after Iran rejected direct talks in response to a letter he sent in March 2025, though they left room for indirect negotiations. Critics say bombing Iran’s nuclear sites, like Natanz, could spark a broader conflict, while supporters argue it’s necessary to deter Iran’s ambitions.

Trump’s stance reflects his preference for decisive action over prolonged diplomacy, consistent with past moves like ordering the 2020 airstrike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
