ISRAEL CONSIDERING DAHLAN FOR POTENTIAL LEADERSHIP ROLE IN POST-WAR GAZA, REPORT SAYS

Middle East World

Wed 16 October 2024:

Israel is reportedly considering a role for exiled former Palestinian security chief, Mohammad Dahlan, in the post-war governance of the Gaza Strip, in the latest rumours of the figure’s potential involvement in the Territory at the invitation of Tel Aviv.

According to Israel’s Channel 12, Israeli officials are mulling over a potential role that Dahlan could play in Gaza following the end of the occupation forces’ ongoing offensive and genocide in the Strip, in a plan that would apparently not necessitate him physically returning to the Territory.

As a prominent figure in Gaza’s politics back in the 1990s and early 2000s, Dahlan led the Palestinian Authority’s Preventive Security Force there before Resistance group, Hamas, took control of the enclave in 2007.

Living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the past 12 years, Dahlan serves as an advisor to its President, Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, and has significantly influenced the Emirates’ policies not only regarding the Israeli-Palestinian issue, but also other regional conflicts.

As a notorious and historic rival of Hamas, Israel and Western nations – particularly the United States – repeatedly recommended him as an alternative to the group, as well as the West Bank-based PA’s leadership. That tacit support has remained, according to reports and, over the past year, Dahlan has been proposed as a potential leading figure in a Palestinian or Arab administration in post-war Gaza – plans of which Tel Aviv continues to constantly debate on and reformulate.

The reported consideration of Dahlan’s future role is despite his open rejection to participate in such plans in recent months, stating on X back in July that “I have repeatedly refused to accept any security, governmental or executive role” following the end of Israel’s offensive.
