ISRAEL EXPECTED TO MOBILISE TENS OF THOUSANDS MORE RESERVISTS: REPORTS

The Israeli government is preparing to mobilize tens of thousands of reservists into the armed forces ahead of establishing full control over the Gaza Strip. These plans have already faced criticism from the Israeli military leadership, Channel 13 reports.

If the plans are approved, the total number of mobilised reservists could reach 430,000 through the end of November, Israel’s Kan broadcaster reports.

The mobilization of tens of thousands of reservists into the army will be approved as early as August 10. They are expected to serve at least 75 days, despite previous government promises.

Senior officials of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sharply criticized the government’s decision as well as the behavior of certain ministers. According to the military, “the war has become a jeep stuck in the sand.”

Among the critics is IDF Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir. The cabinet’s decision was made against his position, as Zamir believes that the capture of the Gaza Strip would be a serious mistake.

Zamir faces opposition from several radical government officials who consider any partial deal with Hamas equivalent to defeat in the war. Israel considers Hamas’s demands for the release of hostages as unacceptable.

On August 8, Israel’s Security Cabinet approved Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to establish full military control over Gaza City. The Israeli government is advancing five main points:

Disarmament of Hamas;
Return of all 50 remaining hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive;
Demilitarization of the Gaza Strip;
Israeli control over security in the Gaza Strip;
Establishment of an alternative civilian government that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.
