Tue 17 March 2026:
Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani had been killed in an Israeli strike.
The killing marks a significant escalation in Israeli-Iranian tensions, as Larijani was a central figure in Tehran’s security and political apparatus.
Who is Ali Larijani?
Known for decades as a measured, pragmatic figure within Iran’s establishment, Larijani has been secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, helping steer Iran’s strategy during the US-Israeli war.
Born in 1958 in Najaf, Iraq, to a wealthy family from Amol, Larijani belongs to a powerful dynasty once described by Time magazine as the “Kennedys of Iran”.
His father was a prominent religious scholar, and at 20, Larijani married Farideh Motahari, daughter of a close confidant of the Islamic Republic’s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini.

Unlike many of his peers, Larijani had a secular academic background, earning a degree in mathematics and computer science before completing a doctorate in Western philosophy focused on Immanuel Kant.
After the 1979 revolution, he joined the IRGC before moving into government, serving as culture minister and later heading the state broadcaster IRIB.
In 2005, he became secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, stepping down in 2007.
He entered parliament in 2008 and served as speaker for three consecutive terms, playing a key role in securing approval for the 2015 nuclear deal.
Larijani returned to the post of security council secretary in August, re-emerging as a central figure in Iran’s leadership.
