Fri 21 January 2022:
After testing positive for COVID-19, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz stated he was isolated and in good condition on Friday.
“I feel good because I am vaccinated. In the coming days I will manage security affairs from my home,” Gantz wrote on Twitter.
Israel has shortened its mandatory isolation period for confirmed carriers to five days. Other senior Israeli cabinet members, including the foreign and finance ministers, have recently tested positive to COVID-19 as well.
The highly infectious omicron has lead to an unprecedented number of daily infections in Israel throughout January. On Tuesday, Israel marked a new record with 71,593 people testing positive for COVID.
The government said on Thursday that schoolchildren will be excluded from quarantine if they are exposed to a COVID carrier, as a record number of students are stranded at home, threatening to bring the economy to a halt. The exception will begin on Thursday. Nearly 200,000 people were in quarantine on Thursday.
