ISRAEL’S NETANYAHU LOOKS TO REACH PLEA BARGAIN IN CORRUPTION TRIAL

Middle East World

Mon 17 January 2022:

In a development that could spell the end of Benjamin Netanyahu’s political career, the former Israeli prime minister is seeking a plea deal in his corruption trial.

Netanyahu was back in the spotlight on Sunday, as he appeared to have progressed in his talks with the state attorney’s office.

After being expelled from power last year, Netanyahu is now the chair of the Likud party and the leader of the opposition. He served in the government for 12 years.

Since 2009, Netanyahu has served as Israel’s Prime Minister. He has been Israel’s leader for the longest time.

Netanyahu appears to have agreed to confess to two counts of breach of trust in exchange for a suspended prison sentence. In addition, he will serve a few months in prison, which will be converted to community service.

The key remaining sticking point in the case appears to be Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit’s insistence on a charge of moral turpitude.

Netanyahu is trying to avoid making a formal declaration since it may result in him being barred from politics for seven years.
