Mon 23 December 2024:

Japan is taking steps toward making life on the Moon a reality, with Kyoto University and construction giant Kajima Corp teaming up to develop a lunar habitat that generates artificial gravity, local media reported Sunday.

The “Neo Lunar Glass” project aims to create a paraboloid structure capable of mimicking Earth-like conditions by using rotation to generate gravity. A ground-based prototype is expected to be completed by the 2030s, according to Kyodo News.

“This project demands a significant technological leap, but we aim to achieve it and pave the way for space colonies,” said Yosuke Yamashiki, a professor of advanced integrated studies in human survivability at Kyoto University.

The Lunar Glass structure will be approximately 200 meters in diameter and 400 meters high, capable of housing up to 10,000 people, according to the agency.

The project is expected to be launched in the current fiscal year.

Research on life on the Moon focuses on understanding its environment and assessing the potential for future habitation. Scientists study the Moon’s surface composition, radiation levels, and temperature extremes to evaluate challenges for sustaining life.

Samples from Apollo missions revealed no signs of native life, but water ice discovered at the lunar poles raises the possibility of supporting human missions.

Robotic landers and orbiters, like NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and China’s Chang’e missions, provide detailed data on the Moon’s geology and resources. Researchers also experiment with growing plants in simulated lunar soil and developing habitats that can shield humans from harsh conditions.

This research aims to support lunar bases, enabling long-term exploration and possibly acting as a gateway for missions to Mars. While no life exists on the Moon now, advancements may one day make living there a reality.
