Sat 06 July 2024:
This week, the Japanese government unveiled its first new banknotes in two decades, featuring 3D hologram technology to deter counterfeiting, according to an Associated Press report on Thursday (July 4). Despite the launch, the current currency will remain valid.
The new banknotes will not be compatible with most vending machines and bus fare systems initially, requiring the continued use of older bills for these transactions. By March 2025, the government aims to have nearly 7.5 billion new banknotes in circulation.

Features of the New Banknotes
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida highlighted that the new 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 1,000 yen bills celebrate Japan’s capitalism, women’s equality, and scientific innovation. The 10,000 yen bill features Eiichi Shibusawa, the “father of Japanese capitalism,” while the 5,000 yen bill honors feminist and educator Umeko Tsuda. The 1,000 yen bill showcases physician and bacteriologist Shibasaburo Kitasato, known for his work on tetanus and the bubonic plague.
The reverse sides of the bills feature images of Tokyo Station, wisteria flowers, and Katsushika Hokusai’s Mount Fuji. Additionally, the new banknotes have larger print to aid readability for the aging population.

Anticipation for Public Reception
Prime Minister Kishida expressed optimism at a Bank of Japan press conference, saying, “I hope the people will like the new bills, and they will help energize the Japanese economy.” The new banknotes will first be distributed to banks and financial institutions before reaching ATMs and stores, meaning it may take some time for the public to encounter them.
