Tue 24 September 2024:
A Jewish-American man has been sentenced to death in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt, raising debate and conspiracy theories regarding possible ties to Israeli spy organization Mossad, according to MEMO.
Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, a native of Washington DC and father of three, was one of 37 individuals sentenced to death by a military tribunal in Kinshasa for their roles in the botched coup on 19 May. The attempted coup, led by Christian Malanga, a used car salesman and gold miner, aimed to overthrow President Félix Tshisekedi’s government.
Amidst the legal proceedings, social media users have circulated photos alleging Zalman-Polun had ties to the CIA and Mossad. These allegations stem from a photograph showing Zalman-Polun and Malanga outside the Golan Spy Shop, a technology and security supply store in Tel Aviv.
The failed coup, parts of which were livestreamed, resulted in six people being killed. NPR reports that Zalman-Polun was present at the presidential palace before Malanga was shot dead by the Congolese army. Zalman-Polun and two other Americans were apprehended on the banks of the Congo River whilst attempting to flee.
During the trial, the accused claimed that they were forced to participate in the coup at gunpoint. Footage shown during the hearings revealed the brutal conditions of their arrest, with one video depicting Zalman-Polun lying naked on a riverboat as soldiers shot at a man trying to swim away.
The US State Department has not declared that Zalman-Polun and the other Americans are wrongfully detained, making US government intervention unlikely. US Ambassador to the DRC, Lucy Tamlyn, condemned the coup and the involvement of American citizens, pledging cooperation with the Congolese authorities in their investigation.

As per Congolese law, the convicted have five days to appeal against their sentences. The DRC reinstated the death penalty last year, ending a decades-long moratorium, in what the government described as an effort to root out “treachery”.
The role of Israel’s Mossad in coups across Africa and Middle East is an ongoing source of speculation. During the 1960s and 70s, Mossad is alleged to have played a role in the overthrow of several governments, including Congo’s Patrice Lumumba, as part of Israel’s Africa strategy to install compliant regimes as a counterweight to Arab nationalism.
