Wed 09 February 2022:
Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated on Wednesday that all remaining Covid restrictions in England will be lifted in less than two weeks.
The current rules, which included the requirement to self-isolate after a positive test, were set to expire on March 24.
The decision, according to the prime minister, is part of the government’s “Living with Covid” strategy.
“Providing the current encouraging trends in the data continue, it is my expectation that we will be able to end the last domestic restrictions, including the legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive—a full month early,” the prime minister told MPs at the start of the Prime Minister Questions session in House of Commons.
Johnson said he hoped to do this as soon as the Commons returns from its upcoming recess on February 21.
The unusual development comes as the number of Covid cases in the country has been dwindling since the Omicron outbreak, and mortality have remained well below many experts’ predictions.
“Mr Speaker I can tell the house today, that it is my intention to return on the first day after the half term recess to present our strategy for living with Covid,” Johnson said.
According to government data, 66,183 new positive cases were found in the last 24 hours on Tuesday, a 41.1 percent decrease from the previous week, when over 100,000 cases were recorded on average.
On a Tuesday, it was the lowest daily infection figure since December 14, when the Omicron wave began.
According to the data, the number of people admitted to hospitals with the virus decreased by 12.8 percent to 1,421 on February 3.
Johnson has been under fire since it was revealed that he hosted multiple parties in his Downing Street office in 2020, during the first phase of Covid, when the country was on lockdown.
Several members of his party have already filed a motion of no confidence in him, urging him to quit immediately.
