Tue 28 December 2021:

On Tuesday, a live-streamed televised debate in Jordan’s parliament on constitutional reforms including gender equality escalated into scuffles between MPs, requiring the session to be suspended.

A furious argument erupted between deputies and parliament speaker Abdelkarim al-Daghmi, with much pushing and pointing.

The argument erupted during a debate on an amendment adding the female noun for a Jordanian citizen, to a chapter in the constitution guaranteeing equal rights of all citizens.

Several MPs argued angrily that the proposal was “useless” during the session, which was broadcast on Al-Mamlaka television channel.

Daghmi walked out, and the meeting was postponed till Wednesday.

Among the other constitutional changes to be debated are the establishment of a “National Security Council” and the reduction of the house speaker’s mandate from two years to one year from the present two-year mandates.

According to analysts, the kingdom’s constitution, first established in 1952, has been changed 29 times, with the monarch’s powers rising at the expense of the legislature.
