Thu 13 January 2022:
Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has asked the UK High Court of Justice to certify three points of law of general public importance, as at least one certified point is required for the Supreme Court to hear Assange’s appeal against extradition to the United States, according to his fiancee Stella Moris.
In order for the country’s supreme court to hear an appeal, the appeal must first be recognized as involving legal issues that are relevant to the general public.
“Julian #Assange has asked the High Court to certify three points of law of general public importance. The Supreme Court cannot hear his appeal unless the High Court agrees to certify at least one of them.
The High Court could notify its decision about certification at any moment,” Moris tweeted.
The London High Court ruled in December in favor of the US request to extradite Assange, rejecting a previous judgement that the whistleblower could not be extradited to the US owing to health concerns and the cruel conditions he may endure in the US prison system.
After WikiLeaks published hundreds of classified papers that exposed war crimes committed by American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the whistleblower is wanted by the US on espionage charges. The Australian journalist faces up to 175 years in jail if he is tried and convicted in the United States.
